Background. This study examines patient volumes and assesses the results for patients with a cauda equina syndrome at a county hospital in Norway. Material and methods. 616 patients operated for a herniated lumbar discus at the Haugesund Hospital were included in this study. Information was gleaned from patient records. Results. Six patients (1%) had a herniated lumbar discus that compromised the cauda equina. The majority of these had a partial cauda equina syndrome with urine retention only. Only one patient with a massive lumbar discus herniation suffered a complete cauda equina syndrome. Interpretations. The results of the operations were considered satisfactory although some patients suffered persistent neural dysfunction. Our results compare well with other reports, which are briefly commented on.
