Abstract

The transmission of stored video from a server to a client across an ATM network is considered. In this context the performance of the renegotiated VBR (RVBR) and renegotiated CBR (RCBR) services is investigated for interactive applications with bounded reaction times, We present two basic results. First, for delay sensitive applications smoothing the video stream in advance is much more efficient, than adding buffer to the network switches. Second, RVBR service leads to higher network utilization than RCBR or CBR service, independent of the call admission control scheme.
