The total Irish salmon catch has fallen over the 10 years 1976-1985 to an annual average almost 30% below that for the previous 5 years. The spawning escapement to freshwater has been insufficient in many recent years to ensure population renewal. This depletion of salmon stocks is occurring despite a contribution from reared smolts. The principal cause is excessive exploitation of salmon in coastal waters.
