Abstract

Hair follicle aging and the aging of the skin are physiological phenomena that commence between a person’s 30s and 40s. The main changes manifest in the increased graying of hair and androgenic alopecia. These changes, however, do not present a defined pathophysiology. This chapter contains an overview of the physiology of the hair follicle, the hair growth cycle, and the major changes that occur in the hair follicle, namely, gray hair, male pattern hair loss/baldness, and female pattern hair loss.
