Abstract

The chapter is summative and seeks to crystalize the educational implications of Jefferson’s revolutionary theory outlined in previous chapters. The three essential features of the theory are described as: (a) the capacity to revise, (b) the capacity for dissent, and (c) the Spirit of 76 as a rhetorical trope and vehicle of certain “revolutionary” moral principles. Each of these three elements are subsequently discussed in terms of their ability to enhance the practice of civic education today.
