Abstract

The role of the anaesthetist in the management of the paraplegic patient has been discussed. Particular emphasis has been laid on the importance of understanding the mechanism and pathways for autonomic hyperreflexia. Maintenance of the integrity of the respiratory and genito-urinary systems have been stressed, for many of these patients die from failure of these systems. In view of the large number of paraplegics who are now becoming pregnant, a section has been devoted to obstetrical management. © 1970 Canadian Anesthesiologists.
