Abstract

This research study examines the perception on research competencies, acquired during university education, of students enrolled in the last three semesters of sociology and social work degree programs at a university from the Coquimbo region (Chile). A qualitative approach of phenomenological design is applied and 12 students are interviewed. Content analyses with open and axial coding phases are conducted. The results show that the students perceive to have acquired basic research competencies related to the early stages of the formulation of a research project. However, they do not acquire more complex competencies that would allow them to conduct research independently. This highlights the mediator role of the teacher through this process. It is concluded that training on research competencies would be favored by developing teaching strategies that promote the development of critical-reflexive thinking and applied research while having a competent professor guiding the process.
