Abstract

Candidemia and systemic candidiasis were considered rare diseases until the 1950s, and by 1964 only 48 cases of disseminated candidiasis had been described. Endemic mycoses such as coccidiomycosis, blastomycosis and histoplasmosis, described in the early twentieth century, remained a medical curiosity for a long time. © 2007 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
