Abstract

Discusses whether 1) exchanges of matter and energy described by trophic dynamics evolve because excess fertility is an integral property of living organisms, or 2) excess fertility evolves because exchanges of material and energy are an integral property of living organisms. The ecosystem axiom states that the energy captured by photosynthesis is not stored in products of photosynthesis but rather as environmental redox potential between the products of photosynthesis. Redox potential refers to the affinity of an atom for the electrons in its outer orbits. The effects of assumptions on ecosystem theory are outlined, concluding that the profound subjectivity, implied equilibrium thermodynamics and traditional metaphysics of the Malthusian axiom have inhibited the development of ecological theory by isolating ecology from the mainstream of 20th century science. -P.J.Jarvis
