This article aims to present how social and vocational services of two hospitals perceive the notion of autonomy in their work with persons who became disabled. In some cases, autonomy can be seen as a goal and in others, as a necessary condition for the management of the patient. According to the position adopted, the support of the patient is personalized (i.e. following predeined procedures adapted to the patients) or individualized (which supposes innovative practices on the part of professionals).
