Abstract

This paper describes pilot plants for biological treatment of pulp and paper mill effluent which were operated over a 1-year period. A plug flow system was more efficient than a completely mixed system, and a 3-day aerated plug flow system was as effective as a 6. 7-day system. Total system efficiencies for 95% BOD//5 reduction were obtained in pilot studies without nutrient addition. All full-scale performance goals determined from pilot studies have been achieved.
