Depending on the scope of application, all used methods of microstructuring offer the possibility to a site-specific deposition of nanoparticles. For the stable adherence of charged particles, it must be feasible to coat substrates by means of layer-by-layer technique. Therefore, surfaces which can be hydrolyzed or which are charged are suitable. The most versatile method is the structuring by means of a microarrayer. Herewith, it is quite easy to punctiformly arrange different functional particles on a substrate, whereas it is better to transmit optional and complex geometric mask structures by the photolithographic and softlithographic methods. All the methods mentioned above enable us to receive structured monolayers of nanoparticles. Thereby, the density of the particle films is high and homogeneous on the whole surface. The functional groups introduced before keep their function on the nanoparticles after the structuring. © 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.
