The post-embryonic development of the component glands of the salivary system of Camponotus rufipes (Formicinae) is studied. This system, is composed of four pairs of glands: the salivary gland of thorax, the post-pharyngeal gland, the hypo-pharyngeal gland and the mandibular gland. The first develops from the duct remainder of the salivary gland of the larva, which degenerates after the last larval instar; the second protrudes from the posterior pharyngeal region; the third protrudes from the region which will form the hypopharyngeal plate; and the last protrudes from the mandibular wall. The adult glands begin their differentiation in the pre-pupal and during the white-eyed pupa stages. The development is studied anatomically and histologically, and in this way an attempt is made to establish their points of origin and possible homologies to those of other Hymenoptera and other insects.
