The Impact of Immigration and Acculturation on the Mental Health of Asian Americans: Overview of Epidemiology and Clinical Implications

Abstract

In this chapter, we focus on an overview of clinical issues in Asian American mental health. In particular, we focus on psychological distress and its manifestation within different subpopulations, looking at common acculturation stressors as a background for understanding Asian American emotional health, as well as other key factors that are likely to affect Asian American mental health. We will review research on various age groups and clinical implications from the literature review, and finally, we look at what is known about mental health problems and mental health service utilization in Asian Americans.
