Epoxy resin systems are generally supplied as a two part system; the epoxy resin and a co-reactant hardener. These co-reactants include aliphatic and aromatic amines, anhydrides, carboxylic acids, phenolic novalacs, and catalysts such as Lewis acids. When cured, epoxies form a hard thermosetting plastic. Cured epoxies have a unique combination of excellent chemical resistance, high strength, good toughness, excellent adhesion and good thermal characteristics. Depending upon the type of epoxy resin or hardener used these various properties can be altered. This paper discusses the synthesis of epoxy resins, how they are cured and where they are used.
