Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that motivate students at Southern University and Baton Rouge Community College. The students' GPA (grade point average) is an indication of how well they do academically, but does not measure how motivated the students are. This study will examine the relationship of motivation and goal attainment from an internal and external view of the students. The dependent factor is the students' performance in higher education. Independent factors include rewards and punishments, self-esteem, money, parental and others involvement, and goal-attainment. The goal of this study is to find ways to help college students perform better in academics by finding the reasons behind their attendance in higher education. A questionnaire will be admitted to 100 students; 50 at Southern University, and 50 at Baton Rouge Community College. From the research findings it will be easier to find which factors play a more important role in the academic performance of college students.
