Abstract

Switching of limestone to oyster shell or switching of a higher soluble limestone to a lower soluble limestone and vice versa in short-term laying trials showed no significant differences in shell quality or layer performance. Blood pH, gastrointestinal pH, apparent calcium digestibility, blood calcium, bone ash, and bone-bending moment were also not affected by the switching of different calcium sources in either direction. Hens adapted to different sources of limestone and oyster shell when a large portion of calcium carbonate was in a particulate form and when calcium intake was adequate.
