Introduction: Orthodontic adhesives routinely used for bracket bonding can have a major contribution in enhancement of bacterial biofilm. Objective: A systematic review was conducted to find out whether incorporating antimicrobial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into orthodontic bonding system affects its shear bond strength (SBS). Materials and methods: Electronic databases were searched using the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Science direct and using keywords; ‘Orthodontic’ OR ‘Orthodontics’ AND ‘ Shear bond strength’ AND ‘ Silver nanoparticles’ AND ‘ Composite’ OR ‘ Adhesive’ OR ‘ Cement’ OR ‘ Bonding’. Data extraction was performed, and the risk of bias was assessed from each study. The results were tabulated. Results: Eleven studies which fulfilled the inclusion criteria were selected. Risk of bias assessment showed a low risk of bias for most of the included studies. Most of the studies showed that the addition of AgNPs into the orthodontic adhesives did not affect their SBS. However, few articles revealed that AgNPs lowered the SBS, although it was still within the clinically acceptable values. Conclusion: In spite of the limitations of the current systematic review, it can be concluded that Incorporation of silver nanoparticles into orthodontic adhesive during bonding procedures does not adversely affect their shear bond strength.
