This chapter outlines the rationale for the book: that climate change is no longer a problem for the physical sciences alone and that the social sciences and humanities must now help shape societal responses. It provides an overview of the other chapters in the book, giving short chapter summaries, before going on to discuss common themes which emerge from the wide range of topic areas and perspectives presented. These include the influence of agriculture on almost every aspect of Ireland’s response to climate change, the weak institutional responses evident in the country’s performance, a focus on mitigation at the expense of adaptation, and a disconnect between Ireland’s image of itself as a “green” isle and its environmental record. However, a renewed energy around climate action, prompted by climate strikes and policy initiatives, is also evident. The chapter concludes by noting the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on social debates about implementing environmental measures.
