Abstract

A building energy management system can be defined as a building automation system that can facilitate demand response by controlling building-side energy resources. Here, a real-time Energy Management System (EMS) is developed to reduce the energy costs charged by the demand charge tariff for a specific commercial building that consists of a public laundry. The authors model the public laundry energy management problem as a multi-task scheduling problem and design a set of algorithms to heuristically control the operations of washing machines and clothes dryers by taking into account the customer-specified task requirements and the laundry owner's budget. Numerical case studies are conducted to validate the proposed EMS.
