The original erythromycin was isolated in 1952 from a soil sample from the Philippine Archipelago. This group of drugs is the least expensive of the penicillin substitutes for penicillin-allergic patients. Erythromycins are almost as effective against streptococci and pneumococci as is penicillin, and they are recommended by the American Heart Association as the best alternative to penicillin for the prophylaxis of endocarditis in rheumatic-fever patients.
