INTERCULTURAL SENSITIVITY AND OPINIONS OF NURSES WORKING IN A RESEARCH HOSPITAL ON IMMIGRANT PATIENTS

Abstract

Objectives: The current research was carried out descriptively to determine the intercultural sensitivity of nurses working in a research hospital and their views on migrant patients. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted with 200 nurses who met the inclusion criteria and volunteered to participate in the study. Research data were collected through “Socio-demographic characteristics information form of nurses” and “Intercultural Sensitivity Scale”. In the analysis of the data, mean ± standard deviation and frequency and percentage values, Independent groups t-test and One-way variance analysis (ANOVA) test were used. Results: The total score means of the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale of the nurses were found to be 77.24 ± 6.18. When the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale was evaluated in terms of the total score, a statistically significant difference was found between the educational status and the scale score (F:1.743, p:0.014). It was found that there is a significant difference between being careful in the communication sub-dimension of the intercultural sensitivity scale and the communication style (F:2.921 p:0.001). Conclusion: In the study, it was determined that the level of sensitivity of nurses between cultures was approximately medium. It has been determined that approximately 70% of nurses do not feel different about care while providing care to immigrant patients. It is recommended to include in-service training programs such as emotional-cognitive behavioral training related to cultural sensitivity to develop intercultural sensitivity in institutions and to include issues to improve intercultural sensitivity and increase foreign language proficiency in the nursing education curriculum.
