In this paper we will not give an exhaustive review of the magnetic properties of lanthanide compounds, but from a few examples we want to emphasize the characteristic properties encountered in such compounds. After a brief survey of the crystal field theory and the interaction mechanisms, we will present successively the problems related to the magnetic anisotropy, the nature of the magnetic ordering, the dipolar ordering, the anomalous rare earth compounds, the investigation of magnetic phase diagrams and to the determination of the exchange and crystal field parameters.
