The M=7 ‘Grand Banks’ earthquake (Doxsee 1948) on the continental slope south of the island of St Pierre in 1929 produced local sediment failure on the continental slope. The sediment failure triggered a turbidity current that flowed for 4–11 h (Hughes Clarke et al. 1990) and broke cables 13 h later on the Sohm Abyssal Plain (Heezen and Ewing 1952), depositing 200 km3 of principally sandy sediment.
