Objective: This study aims to characterize the skills of nurse managers at a teaching hospital and their organizational strategies to mobilize these skills. Method: An exploratory, qualitative study was conducted at a public hospital with 15 nurse managers. Observation and semi-structured interviews were carried out, and the data was thematically analyzed. Results: The results showed nurses aged between 27 and 60 years, 60% of which had a specialization in management. Management presents challenges such as: knowledge unit and task approach to administrative issues, the management of conflicts. The necessary skills are the acquisition of knowledge, the exercising of leadership, lifelong learning, decision-making, resource management and interpersonal competences. Organizational strategies are promoted through management courses and in-service training. Conclusion: The discussion of nurse managers competences allow educational centers and health managers visualize aspects of the formation of these professionals for the managerial role. Of these professionals which are specific to the managerial role.
