The spread of networked computing environments has led to the development of digital tools and environments to support collaborative design activities. Based on review of our past virtual design studios that employed such tools, this chapter emphasizes the socially and spatially situated nature of collaborative design activities and settings, and identifies critical issues for future development of collaborative virtual environments.
