The global scientific discipline of addiction studies that has developed during the past half century would be impossible without the infrastructure of the publishing enterprise. At the core of this infrastructure lie the peer-reviewed scientific article and the expanding network of journals that publish such articles. Throughout this book, we have focused on publishing scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals because this is a key part of the meaning of scientific life.
