Abstract

The basic pathophysiological feature in Hirschsprung's disease (HD) is a functional obstruction caused by a narrowed distal aganglionic colonic segment that prevents the propagation of peristaltic waves. Despite extensive research, the pathophysiology of HD is not fully understood. There is no clear explanation for the occurrence of spastic or tonically contracted aganglionic segment of bowel. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.
