Abstract

The first terrestrial forms of arthropods appeared in the Palaeozoic, at the turn of the Silurian and Devonian ages some 400 million years ago. Today, arthropods form about 85% of all known animal species. They are characterized by segmentation of the body and limbs, reticulated paired appendages (antennae etc.), exoskeleton formed mainly of chitin, and bilateral symmetry.
