In this chapter, we consider an innovative approach to perform low-complexity localization based on audio signal processing. The “entity” to be localized emits a sound and a set of “anchors,” which perceive the sound intensity (through audio sensors), and cooperate together properly, estimate (a) the position of the entity and (b) the direction of sound emission. We first derive a framework for centralized detection in one-dimensional scenarios, and also discuss possible distributed approaches to the localization problem at hand. Then, we extend our framework to a more realistic two-dimensional scenario. In both cases, ideal audio propagation conditions are assumed. Moreover, the proposed framework allows to derive relevant insights into this problem.
