Abstract

examine the extant literature on sibling relationships in infancy and early childhood among normal families / center . . . on the more commonly reported interactional characteristics of such relationships from research groups in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain / relations between these characteristics and sibling constellation variables (e.g., birth spacing, sex) are examined next, in particular because the impact of sibling relationships on personality and intelligence traditionally has been examined in those terms / interactions between young siblings are then discussed in relation to the family context, with specific emphasis on the parent–child relationship in organizing and mediating the development of early sibling relationships / ends with a broader discussion of what appear to be the salient theoretical issues underlying early sibling relationships and some pressing questions about siblings that remain to be explored (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved)
