As professional bodies have developed best practices for gender-affirming health care, advocates have sought to enshrine protections for transgender and gender-diverse youth in law and policy. The politicization of transgender rights in recent years has affected the legal landscape and created both affirming and restrictive laws that healthcare providers must consider in their practices. This chapter examines some of the federal and state protections that providers should be aware of, as well as emerging legal debates around the treatment of transgender and gender-diverse youth and guiding principles of law that practitioners should follow.
