Industrial Automation control systems are highly demanding devices regarding real-time control. They excel at this task and have been perfected since their introduction till today. Thanks to their own domain problems, they do not always receive innovations directly from their general-purpose computation counterparts. This paper will focus on the new generation of industrial automation controllers, which features advanced IoT capabilities, virtualization, and open-source software integration while creating the possibility to integrate machine learning models into the automation process. The AIoT-enabled industrial controllers will help close the borders between general programming and its techniques and frameworks, to the world of Automation, changing what is state of the art today.
