Discusses the concept of multicultural counseling competency (MCC), which is the provision of professional services to persons of culturally diverse backgrounds by counselors competent in understanding and providing professional services to such groups. The chapter examines current conceptualizations of and assessment procedures for MCC with special consideration for treating the Asian American population. The authors focus on MCC as it relates to Asian Americans because this racial group, to a great extent, has been an invisible minority in society. Topics covered include assessment of MCC in graduate training programs as well as characteristics of several MCC instruments. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
