Indians now make up a significant proportion of immigrants to the US. The number of Indians in the US doubled between 1980 and 1990, and currently stands at one million (Ghasarian, 1995). Mexicans account for 15 percent of all documented immigrants to the US, and are the most numerous; Indians account for 5.3 percent and rank fifth (Isbister, 1996). Immigrant Indians have achieved considerable economic success, particularly in the motel business.
