The application of both high resolution X-ray diffraction and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) to the problem of measuring magnetostrictive strain is discussed. Examples are given of the measure- ment of the spontaneous magnetostriction of a single crystal of US at temperatures close to the Curie temperature, the measurement of the magnetostriction tensor in a poly crystalline sputtered film of FeCo, and the first attempt to measure magnetostrictive strain in FeCo via EXAFS.
