Abstract

The Department of Statistics at the University of Chicago was founded as the Committee on Statistics in fall 1949, chaired by W. Allen Wallis. It became a Department in 1956 with Jimmie Savage as its first Chairman. It has maintained a reputation at the highest level for research and teaching for over 60 years.
