Abstract

It is clear that, when researched and analyzed critically, social networks provide a ubiquitous and powerful tool to provide insight into current and past societal trends and perspectives. This paper provides a model for thinking about and implementing social networks for organizations which function in and serve across virtual spaces. From distance learning to e-commerce, b-learning and corporate training to informal learning, sports and entertainment industries, social media is a powerful context for dialogue, expression and lived experience. How well prepared are our organizations to understand current trends and perspectives in virtual spaces? Where do we begin? What skills do employees and students need to analyze critically the data gathered from social media and other virtual spaces? This paper presents specific strategies, valuable recommendations, and further direction for social networks' use in these areas. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
