Abstract

Teaching is one of the most stressing jobs. Some of these stressing triggers usually generating negative effects in the mental health of teachers are the psychosocial risk factors at work. Objec tive: This paper aims to analyze how these factors affect teachers in different types of educational institutions: public, semi-private, and private. Method: A non- experimental, descriptive-comparative research was conducted. The sample was composed of 340 teachers from the city of Antofagasta in Chile. The ISTAS21, the DASS 21 and the Maslach Burnout Inventory were applied. Results: Teachers in semi- private schools registered the highest indices of psychosocial risk factors and burnout at work; they also hold the highest record of medical leaves of absence for stress in comparison with public and private schools. Conclusions: This study has revealed information regarding teachers’ working conditions in different types of institutions in Antofagasta. As a result, an intervention plan was designed and applied at the organizational level to ease the negative effects in the mental health of teachers.
