Objectives: The overall aim was to test if the Australien developed model Crisis Assessment and Treatment (CAT) services was applicable in Denmark (Mental Health Centre Frederiksberg) and to evaluate if it could increase efficiency as well as ensure patient centered care (PPC) monitored as: - Patients retain a greater feeling of familiarity, security and autonomy during treatment. - Reduction of family burden and a more satisfactory form of care for both patients and families. - Patients are spared the stigma of psychiatric hospital admission and patients are less likely to become institutionialised. - Resources in mental health care can be distributed more effectively. Methods: A consumer represented task force chose to adopt an Australian model with triage by telephone, crisis assessment, gate-keeping and home treatment up to 6 weeks in a major city mental health service. Following a visit to observe Australian CAT teams at work, the group liaised with domestic prehospital services and adapted the Australian model completely to Danish conditions. Patient satisfaction measurde by tablets at home is introduces. Hospital admission rates prospectively and retrospectively are compared. Results: Data collection is ongoing and the final results will be announced publicly for the first time at the conference. Preliminary results indicates a clear reducion in bed days, which means more staff available for hometreatment and thereby give the opportunity of a more satisfactory form of care for both patients and families. Conclusion: Hospital admission rates are reduced significantly. Patient satisfaction is being explored. Patient centered care is optimized in a broader context and should be implemented widely in the mental health service reducing the need of emergency units and beds.
