Abstract

This chapter explores the superstar music cities of London, New York City and Los Angeles. Drawing on the urban sociability discourse and algorithm analysis linked to traditional and digital business models, it uncovers the global music ecosystem based on a three-tiered hierarchy of authority. Hierarchical activity is organized in a pyramid with the highest tier having the most power, control, and influence in the music industry. The chapter argues that London is highest in the music hierarchy because it is the music business capital of the world. As the digital and music consumption capital of the world, it notes that New York City is second in the hierarchy, while Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world and a vibrant live music capital, is third.
