This chapter analyses population transition in India during 1950-2015. It is estimated that the increase in India's population had accounted for almost 20\% of the increase in the world population during the period 1950 through 2015. The chapter analyses how transition in fertility and mortality and the associated change in population age structure has contributed to the change in the population stock-size and age structure. It is argued that India should appropriate its policy response to the current state of population transition so that the change in the population stock in the coming years remains in tune with sustainable development processes.
