Abstract

There is an important role for α-MSH and the melanocortin receptors in ocular immunity, development and health. This chapter will cover what is known about how α-MSH is part of the mechanisms of ocular immune privilege, about the expression of melanocortin receptors and the implications of these findings on the role of α-MSH in ocular physiology and its potential use to treat ocular pathologies. © 2010 Landes Bioscience and Springer Science+Business Media.
