Coping with epilepsy: Research and interventions

Abstract

Epilepsy is an umbrella diagnosis covering a range of etiologies and presentations, with the unifying factor being recurrent seizures. Due in part to the unpredictable and intrusive nature of seizures, epilepsy has the potential to significantly impact personal experience and functioning across the wide range of physical, psychological, and social domains of living. Along with the potential physical and cognitive problems associated with seizures, epilepsy has been associated with psychological and emotional problems, social isolation, and problems in education, employment, family life, and leisure activities (Thompson &Oxley, 1993). © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
