Abstract

In this paper, the close interplay between aesthetic and cognitive considerations in scientific imaging (particular in different kinds of microscopy) is examined and highlighted. Both in the process of construction and in the interpretation of scientific images, one finds a central role for aesthetic considerations. These considerations are crucial to shape the informational content of the resulting images. It is argued that, rather than detracting from the cognitive role scientific images play, the presence of aesthetic considerations is decisive to make these images what they are.
