New ternary arsenides ET 2 AS 2 (E = Ca, Sr, Ba; T = Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) were prepared. The cell data were determined by X-ray powder methods. All these compounds crystallize in the tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 structure (I 4/mmm), which consists of layers of edge-shared TAS 4 tetrahedra. The alkaline-earth atoms are intercalated between the layers.
