This chapter provides a brief introduction to the greenhouse crop growth system justifying the need for automation and describing new trends in the problem. A conceptual diagram of greenhouse production is developed and a multilayer hierarchical control architecture is explained as the basic control structure used in the book, within which multiple objectives can be accounted for from an optimization point of view. A brief description of the greenhouses used to perform the experiences shown in the book is also included.
