Abstract

Why was lunar theory so actively pursued? There were theoretical as well as practical reasons why astronomers, and especially those working in the middle of the eighteenth century, were highly interested in accurate methods to compute lunar positions for specified times. The theoretical ones had to do with the general progress of science in the eighteenth century (and later); on the practical side, lunar theory contributed to navigation at sea.
