Abstract

Japan has a long history of wooden houses. At the same time, Japan is a country of earthquakes. Wooden houses in Japan have suffered great damage caused by strong earthquakes. Recently in the Kobe earthquake, a great number of wooden houses were destroyed and more than 5,000 human lives were lost. This paper presents the overall view of wooden houses, mainly in Japan, concerning their seismic performance.
