Abstract

How the Pacific Islands respond to and deal with growing perceived threats of climate change can provide the wider world with valuable lessons. Incorporating traditional ecological knowledge alongside contemporary science, challenging existing formal institutions and finding new ways of dealing with a future that seems uncertain and dictated by donors and larger powers is crucial to the survival and independence of Pacific Island nations. Much of this depends on intergenerational thinking and the willingness to both fight to be heard and work with others, all fundamental to a more secure future.
